Primal screaming may be the key to reducing work stress

Primal screaming may be the key to reducing work stressPrimal screaming may be the key to reducing work stressThere are tons of tips out there on how to reduce stress. From meditation to exercise to a daily glass of wine, but perhaps the simplest one and arguably most effective one has been around since humans came into existence. Letting out a loud and long primal scream may be the way to reduce stress, according to research. After all, before SoulCycle and bikram yoga-you know, the dark ages-all humans could do at the time to deal with stress was scream really loudly or maybe hit a rock against anotlageher rock. A recent Washington Post-UMass Lowell poll found that out of 1,000 randomly selected adults for the survey 19% of the fans indicated theyalways yell at the TV when watching sports. One respondent told the Vancouver Sun, yelling can seem absolutely ridiculous. But in the moment, it feels so right. It makes everything feel better. The survey also found that women outnumbered m en (62% versus 56%) when it came to sometimes yelling at sports on TV.Letting it all outPrimal screaming as a therapeutic tool was developed by Arthur Yanov in the 1970s. His notable patients included John Lennon and Yoko Ono.For the first time in the history of psychology there is a way to access feelings, hidden away, in a safe way and thus to reduce human suffering. Engineering English A New Twist on ESL

Engineering English A New Twist on ESL Engineering English A New Twist on ESL If you are an aspiring engineering student living outside the U.S., you have mora options than ever for studyingand succeedingat a first-class U.S. engineering school. American colleges and universities are investing in new programs to attract you to their campuses, and many of those initiatives are aimed at supporting your command of the English language.A basic ability to function in English is essential if you want to score well on the TOEFL or IELTS exams required by fruchtwein American schools, but thats only the first step, says Julia Youst, an instructor in the Intensive English Language Program at Portland State University. The international engineering students who stand out from the crowd have invested the extra time in developing their familiarity with U.S. academic culture in general, while seeking out ways to learn how English is used in real-world engineering settings, says Youst.Linguists call this Engineering English. Language researchers have developed a Student Engineering English Corpus (SEEC) containing nearly 2 million of the most frequently used words in core textbooks across all engineering disciplines. By organizing these words into logical word families and word types, the SEEC can highlight the formulaic multi-word units or collocations (known as language prefabs) that engineers most commonly use in their technical communication. The idea is to encourage instructors of engineering-focused English for Specific Purposes (ESP) or English as a Second Language (ESL) courses to emphasize these language prefabs in their curricula. If you are considering pursuing a U.S. undergraduate or graduate degree in engineering, here are a few ideas that can help you prepare yourself for success in Engineering English.Bridge to SuccessYoust suggests that some students could benefit from selecting a university that offers some form of summer bridge program for incoming internation al students. These programs help students get up to speed in American academic culture and lifestyle, and some engineering schools even offer discipline-focused learning experiences. When students begin their regular studies immediately after arriving in the United States, they often get overwhelmed by the shock of adjusting to a new culture, a new language and a new approach to learning. Summer bridge programs are one way to address these issues before they can have an impact on a students academic performance, says Youst. One place to search out and evaluate the programs and services offered at U.S. schools is the Web site of the Institute for International Education and its ESL-focused sub-organization known as Intensive English USA.Resources for Self StudyWherever you may be in the process of applying to study abroad, its never too soon to begin the process of honing your Engineering English skills. You can even do it on your own time, through self-study.One option is Cambridge Un iversity Presss Cambridge English for Engineering, a study guide for intermediate and upper-intermediate learners with accompanying audio CD that provides practical lessons for engineers, engineering technicians, or technical managers in any branch of the engineering field. The course focuses on the use of English when working with drawings, describing technical problems, and discussing dimensions and precision. Its a 10-unit program covering listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with an emphasis on realistic activities that help you practice in professional contexts.Another source of comprehension practice with an engineering bent is an all-online option from the British Council, the UKs international organization for cultural relations and educational opportunities.Although there are some differences between British and American English, the British Council site is highly relevant to U.S.-style engineering education. It features a range of scholarly articles in engineering pro jects, engine design, computer systems and computation, chemical and nuclear engineering, alternative energy, and other technology-focused fields. Articles and streaming video presentations are followed by comprehension exercises that test your grasp of the language.Communication Key to Your DegreeEven if you have been told your English skills are high, you can still benefit from some intensive preparation before beginning a regular U.S. academic program, says Youst. The more students learn how to communicatereally communicatein the classroom or workplace with other engineers from around the world, the better they will do in an engineering degree program.Michael McRae is an independent writer. The more students learn how to communicatereally communicatein the classroom or workplace with other engineers from around the world, the better they will do in an engineering degree program.Julia Youst, instructor, Portland State University

Computer-Assisted Interviewing

Computer-Assisted InterviewingComputer-Assisted InterviewingThose bewerberinterview questions you answer may have been designed by a computer.Next time you step into a job interview, you may be facing more than a savvy but lone human resources manager or hiring manager she may be backed up by a computer program.Recruiters and human resources professionals are using technology to stack the deck in their favor to select the right candidate, giving themselvs a competitive edge - the kind you would seek in a casino, said Dr. Larry Pfaff, a human resources consultant who specializes in candidate selection techniques, organizational needs assessment and performance appraisal.Professional gamblers know which games have the best odds when they go to Las Vegas, Pfaff said. They know ahead of time that roulette and slots have poor odds, and cards and dice games have better odds. Its like when recruiters look first at resumes and candidates skills to decide whom to interview - who has the bes t chance of success. After almost 30 years as a consultant, Dr. Pfaff developed SELECTPro, a Web-based program that helps recruiters and hiring managers design and develop better interview questions to increase the odds of hiring someone who will be successful, he said.SELECTPro is an outgrowth of my work helping companies design a better interview and screening process for hiring, he said. Most hiring companies put the most weight on face-to-face interviews, but that is the area they are worst at the interviews arent structured and the questions are horrible, so they end up making gut decisions.SELECTPro allows recruiters and hiring managers to build customized interviews based on a database of more than 500 questions across 55 different skill areas developed by Dr. Pfaff and used extensively during his career. The questions are based on behavioral event interviewing (BEI) techniques that use candidates past performance to gauge their future potential.Over the years I developed this huge question bank based around skill areas - interpersonal skills, leadership skills, sales skills, that sort of thing - that recruiters and hiring managers can use to identify what skills candidates need and then pull specific BEI questions from those areas to create a more powerful and effective interview, Pfaff said.Screen First, Interview LaterSELECTPro is also effective when used to develop angeschlossen interviews for use as candidate pre-screening tools. Companies can develop their own initial online interviews and can direct candidates to a customized site where they reply to preselected questions from the SELECTPro database. And SELECTPro is just one of a growing number of online candidate assessment tools available. The days of handing a clipboard and pen to candidates are long over, says Brian Stern of Cleveland-based Shaker Consulting. Innovative companies are now looking for new ways to successfully vie for talent including online interviews and customized simulatio ns that mimic specific job roles within a company so candidates can get a feel for the job.The more levels of screening you have, the better. Used this way, SELECTPro doesnt take the place of an in-person interview, but it can serve along with the face-to-face interview to reinforce your initial gut reactions to a candidate, Pfaff said, and that can mean the difference between hitting the jackpot and going bust.

Why Temp and Seasonal Employees Need Employee Benefits

Why Temp and Seasonal Employees Need Employee BenefitsWhy Temp and Seasonal Employees Need Employee BenefitsCurrently, its a candidate-driven job market. This means that employers must offer the best compensation and benefits in order to attract and retain the best employees. Oftentimes full time and some part-time employees get access to these perks, but temporary and seasonal employees are left out. They may just assume that the temporary workers automatically get benefits from their agency, or that they dont need them because they are only working for a short period of time. This is notlage always the case. Most recent reports from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that only around 57 percent of all small businesses actually offer health insurance benefits to their workforce, but that this number has grown dramatically since the inception of the Affordable Care Act of 2010. Companies with 50 or mora employees are required to offer access to minimum health insurance option s. Smaller companies that want to offer something more than just a paycheck to their workforce in an effort to attract and retain the best are using benefits and perks to sweeten the pot. Yet, studies have shown that half of all employers offer additional perks, like life insurance, retirement savings plans, flexible work schedules, and voluntary benefit programs. Ideas for Seasonal Employee Benefits There are some additional benefits and perks that any employer can offer to its temporary or seasonal workers, which will help them to complete their contract and enjoy some of the other perks that regular long-term employees do. Temporary workers account for a large chunk of the workforce, and they often become permanent employees, so treating them right from the start counts. Using temporary and seasonal workers can pose certain challenges, but these only come from strict benefit rules that leave them ineligible for standard health insurance. It takes creative planning to provide benefits and perks to temp employees. Meals, Beverages, and Snacks All employees need access to healthy foods, snacks, and refreshing beverages while at work. One nice perk to include for your temps includes free lunches, a coffee maker and cooler filled with free drinks, and a snack cart in the break room. All temps and seasonal workers can stay focused on completing tasks and they appreciate this gesture because they dont have to spend their hard-earned dollars on food. On-the-Job Training While they may be working for you for a short period of time, temps are looking for the opportunity to learn some new transferable skills. Make sure they have access to your online training systems and any classes you provide for regular employees. Encourage them to complete these training programs for inclusion in future hiring activities. This benefits your company because your temps will be better prepared and trained for their tasks too, which means they can ramp up to productivity fast. Company Discounts As a company, you likely have access to multiple discounts from local vendors, restaurants, entertainment venues, and business services. Why not pass these nice discounts and perks down to your temps too? They will appreciate being able to make their paychecks stretch that much further, and you will be giving back to the community at the same time. Supply a discount pass or give your temporary workers the chance to buy discounted event tickets from your HR office. Performance Incentives Temporary and seasonal workers are ready to work hard for your company during their time with you, so why not offer them some decent bonuses and other incentives? Use a pay for performance model to give an end of contract bonuses based on individual efforts, loyalty, and going the extra mile. These can be cash bonuses, gift cards, and recognition. Provide a recommendation too, which they can take with them as they move on to other temp contract assignments. Voluntar y Benefits While it may not be a requirement to provide health insurance to your temporary and seasonal workers, you are still obligated to provide a panzerschrank and healthy work environment. You can offer them voluntary benefits which they can pay for at low group rates. These benefits can include dental and vision care, life insurance, savings plans, and access to the corporate wellness program. Early Contract Buyout Many temps and seasonal workers are hired on for a few weeks to a few months. If you value a temporary employee who has performed well, buy out their contract and make them a permanent member of your team. This is a welcomed incentive that many temps dream of. Negotiate with your staffing agency to get the best buyout fee.

Why you should wear a high collar in your office this fall

Why you should wear a high collar in your office this fallWhy you should wear a high collar in your office this fallShoulder pads, high heels, a tailored suit, the black turtleneck, etc., All of these at one point have been considered power items of clothing. And this fall aleidher power item will be making the rounds, but it isnt very original. We have landlandseen this look over the years but perhaps in this era of MeToo and protests it is quite fitting literally.Get ready to see some high collars in your office. High Elizabethan-type collars were all over the spring 2019 New York Fashion Week runways including Versace, Gucci, and Chanel. Ruffled collars used to represent your social class and power level. The bigger the collar, the more formidable you were.Ian Mortimer wrote inThe Time Travelers Guide to Elizabethan England, At the height of the craze, in the 1580s and 1590s, ruffs are made up of up to six yards of starched material, with up to 600 pleats in them, extending eight inches or more from the neck. This is why we saw titans like Queen Elizabeth wear them. Though both women and men wore these collars, for women it was especially a power move as a womans neck has a bit of a vulnerable, fragile status associated with it. A high collar gives it a robust accentuation more so than even a anschauung necklace.High-collared womenAnd that powerful neck piece has remained powerful even if we (thankfully) removed a few yards of material. As Vanity Fair writer Keziah Weir pointed out in a recent piece,Ruth Bader Ginsburg wore collars and ruffs around her uniform robes to show she was distinctly different than the others and that feminity should be synonymous with power not contrarian. Pioneer dressing and prairie chic have also been making the retail rounds complete with high-buttoned up collars. In addition to the runways, we are also seeing this high collar movement in films this fall. Of course, it is all the rage in Mary Queen of Scots as Saoirse Ronan (Mar y) and Margot Robbie (Queen Elizabeth) duke it out over who gets to be the most powerful in all the land in Kabuki-like makeup, giant red hair and of course, those triumphant collars. In On the Basis of Sex, we also get to see a young Ruth Bader Ginsberg (played by Felicity Jones) start to find her voice in her incredible career as well as her fashion sense. And in A Simple Favor, Blake Livelys enigmatic walking contradiction of a neighbor traipses around in mens suits and collars. Weir also points out that in the upcoming film Colette, starring Keira Knightly as a ghostwriter for her husband of a hit novel that ends up giving him all the glory and credit, uses her collar fashion game to rebel against her controlling husband.Even the new power suit for women features high ruffled collars and bright colors and patterns as power dressing doesnt mean not being feminine-style has to be eliminated. Wall Street Journal Haley Phelan wrote, Women are encouraged to play to their individual s trengths, rather than struggle to conform to some preconceived ideal. And naturally, theyll need a new uniform for this changing environment- one thats sophisticated, with a side of sticking-it-to-the-man tude.

This California ruling could decide future of contracted work

This California ruling could decide future of contracted workThis California ruling could decide future of contracted workThis month, the California Supreme Court challenged the entire gig economys business model, ruling that a contractor must be classified as an employee if they do jobs that are part of the usual course of the companys business. It used the example of hiring a plumber versus a seamstress to illustrate its new test. When a retail store hires an outside plumber to repair a leak in a bathroom on its premises the services of the plumberare leid part of the stores usual course of business, the ruling stated. On the other hand, when a clothing manufacturing company hires work-at-home seamstresses to make dresses from cloth and patterns supplied by the company that will thereafter be sold by the company the workers are part of the hiring dateneinheits usual business operation.Plumbers are contractors who are not part of your regular day-to-day operations. Meanwhile, a seams tress, whose work you rely on to make sales, should be an employee.California contractors must be employees if they are part of usual course of businessIf the contractors are core features of a companys business, in other words, they must be considered employees. This ruling could be a punishing blow to technology companies that rely on third-party contractors. Under the typical gig economy business model, independent contractors are free to be their own boss, driving cars for Uber and Lyft and delivering food for GrubHub on their own time. But that freedom comes at the cost of losing the benefits and protections that full-time employees have. Business models like Uber and its ilk depend on this arrangement to save on costs. Research has found that contractors cost companies around 25 percent less in costs, compared to a full-time employee. For now, the ruling only affects workers in the state of California, so if you are an Uber driver in New York City, the ruling does not yet apply. But overall, the ruling provides a roadmap for other Silicon Valley contractors on how they can gain legal protection and fight back against companies classifying them as contractors. This Monday, for example, lawyers for a GrubHub worker in California are asking a judge to reconsider a previous ruling based on the California high courts new test. In the previous ruling, Raef Lawson was not considered a GrubHub employee because the company did not control how he made his deliveries. But under the new test, this could change. Lawsons lawyers told Reutersthat Lawson is entitled to be classified as an employee with an employees overtime benefits because his delivery work was vital to GrubHubs business operations.

3 Bad Habits of Job Seekers

3 Bad Habits of Job Seekers 3 Bad Habits of Job Seekers 6As a job seeker, you need to be well-rested for your job search. After all, sending all those carefully crafted job applications is time consuming and can drain your energy. But between looking for a job and family demands, you̢۪re probably not getting as much sleep as you need, and you might be picking up some bad habits of job seekers. Thing is, if you̢۪re not getting eight hours of shut eye, you run the risk not only of sleep deprivation, but other issues such as depression, forgetfulness, and even weight gain. Working Mother Magazine recently published a slideshow of the things that we all do before bedtime- but shouldn̢۪t be doing. Each of these activities can impede sleep, thereby causing you to become sloppy in your job search. Here are just a few things that you might be doing- and what you should do instead. Take a hot bath. It makes sense, especially on a cold winter̢۪s night, to take a hot bath before bed. But the body needs to cool down- not warm up- in order to fall asleep. So either dial down the hot water in your shower, or take a warm bath at least one hour before bedtime. This is one of the bad habits of job seekers that many people do thinking they are helping themselves but in reality, the opposite is true. Go online. Another bad habits of job seekers is using the computer at night. Between all the daily demands in your life, you̢۪re super busy during the day. So you might take some time at night to look for a job (and sure, you click through your friends̢۪ photos on Facebook, too). Turning on your laptop at night can interrupt your body̢۪s natural circadian rhythm, so shut down your devices at least 30 minutes or more before you plan to go to bed. Watch TV. Sure, turning on the tube is an easy way to relax after a long day of job hunting. Pilot Planning Tips for Night Flying

Pilot Planning Tips for Night Flying Pilot Planning Tips for Night Flying Nighttime can be a fantastic time to fly: The air is usually still, the airspace quiet, and most would agree that the sight of the stars against the dark sky is a view not to be missed. However, night flying has its challenges and, while theres nothing inherently dangerous about flying at night, a night flight can quickly turn hazardous if youre not adequately prepared. Preflight planning- not only the preflight itself- is so important to flying, and night flying is no different. Here are a few preflight planning tips to ensure that you avoid surprises on your next night flight. Allow Extra Time Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to properly prepare for night flying. During the day, many of us get accustomed to hopping into the airplane after just a check of the windsock and a quick preflight, but things can be a bit more challenging at night. For one, you may not be able to see the windsock as clearly, so you might need to call AWOS or listen to ATIS for navigation cues beforehand. Your preflight will also take a bit longer than usual. Youll have a flashlight in one hand and the checklist in the other, and in general, its just more difficult to see things in the dark. The aircraft documents, the fuel youve pumped, the surface of the aircraft, your kneeboard, etc.- everything will require a closer look. Bring the Right Equipment Be sure to bring two flashlights. Youll need one to hold onto and another easily accessible for when you drop the first one and it rolls to the back of the aircraft. Also, you might consider a head-mounted flashlight, which allows you to be hands-free while still aiming the light at whatever youre looking at. Youll probably want one with a white light and a red light, or a flashlight that does both. The white light is bright enough to see during the preflight and the red light is dim enough to maintain proper night vision during flight. Let Your Eyes Adjust According to the  FAA Airplane Flying Handbook, it takes five to ten minutes for the rods in your eyes to adjust to the darkness. Once they do, your eyes are 100 times more sensitive to light than during daylight. After 30 minutes, when your eyes become almost fully adjusted to the darkness, theyre about 100,000 more sensitive to light than before. While flying at night, keep in mind that looking directly at something, like another aircraft, can actually cause the object to disappear from your field of vision (its one of the common nighttime illusions). This is why you should look to the side, instead. Double-Check the Weather Its easy enough to see bad weather during the daytime. At night, however, clouds, rain showers, and thunderstorms are more difficult to see visually. Before you take off, youll want to be a bit more careful about checking the weather, including current METARs, TAFs, and the area forecast. A flight service specialist can be helpful in this respect, even for local flights. Pay special attention to the temperature/dew point spread. Nighttime is a common time for the fog to form, and it can form quickly. Bring Extra Fuel It isnt always necessary or even possible to bring extra fuel, but consider it when possible. Itll be one less thing to worry about when things dont go as planned. You might just be thankful you did when you realize the fixed based operator (FBO) has shut down for the night and theres no self-service fuel available. Test the Aircraft Lights During your preflight, pay special attention to the navigation lights (position lights) and the landing and taxi lights. Pay attention to the aircraft interior lights, like the panel lights, which can be extremely dim in some older airplanes. If youre a daytime flyer most of the time, you should become familiar with the positions of knobs and levers, the on/off positions of important switches, and the dome lights, if there are any. It wouldnt hurt to review the airport lighting systems. What color are the taxiway lights again? How much runway do you have left when the runway lights turn yellow and then red? Check Qualifications Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations say that you need to have accomplished at least three takeoffs and landings to a full stop at night (an hour after sunset to an hour before sunrise) in the past 90 days in order to carry passengers. Its easy to violate this one. Check Hours for ATC, FBOs, Etc Have you ever arrived at an airport just to realize that fuel services arent available after hours? Or have you tried to fly an approach just to be informed by air traffic control (ATC) that the approach isnt authorized at night? Or planned to take off on a particular runway, only to realize that night takeoffs arent allowed? It is where it can be important to pay attention to details- including the notes on charts. Whats available during the day isnt always available at night. Route Planning If youre flying a night VFR cross country, your planning will change slightly. Instead of choosing your regular checkpoints, youll want to choose checkpoints that are well lit and easily seen from the air. A lake bed, for example, which is highly visible during the day will blend in with the rest of the darkness below you, but a city or another airport will be much easier to identify at night. Plan your route along lighted checkpoints like cities, towns, airports, and highways.  Make sure you know the terrain around you and your minimum safe altitudes! Review Emergencies Emergencies will be different at night. Imagine a complete electrical failure. Instruments are so important tonight flying that a complete electrical failure can come as a complete shock. Once you get your bearings after a scenario like that, you might be stuck doing a no-flap, no-light landing. Another emergency to consider is the off-field or emergency landing at night. During the day, its simple enough to pick a field to land in- at night, its a bit more complicated. You dont want to aim for complete darkness, but lights usually mean houses and people. Its one of those emergencies that theres no perfect answer for, so carefully weigh your options ?along your route of flight before taking off.??

How to algorithm optimize your resume to get past the bots

How to 'algorithm optimize' your resume to get past the bots How to 'algorithm optimize' your resume to get past the bots More and more companies today are using screening algorithms to aid in their recruitment of new hires. It’s not practical anymore to have human resource professionals sift through hundreds of resumes for a single position, and so companies are turning to software with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning capabilities to do the heavy lifting, allowing the HR professional to spend more quality time with their hiring managers putting together better job descriptions, job specs, and core competencies.AI makes those folks in HR more effective at screening candidates when they spend quality time getting to know what a hiring manager is seeking.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Plus, HR folks are often not qualified to decide the ideal candidate through a review of resumes for a partnering hiring manager. So instead, the hiring manager can set the parameters for the s oftware and HR can manage the flow of applicants coming in.Similar to how search engine optimization works for websites, a resume screening algorithm is looking for keywords, phrases, and text strings within the document itself. These keywords are usually the knowledge, skills, and abilities a company is looking for in the ideal candidate, and often include the duties of the job. The algorithm will sift through a resume to match against the keywords. Often, from here, a resume is scored according to keyword match and fit. Often, hiring managers can emphasize the order of magnitude for knowledge, skills, and abilities. So, one skill might have a higher weight in whether a candidate is a fit for the job.The downside to using AI to sift through job candidates is that machines, rather than people, perform the tasks. It is going to find the candidate according to the pre-determined criteria. This limitation puts a lot of pressure on the hiring manager to be thorough about the requirement s for the hire. If jobs become too standardized by these algorithms, companies can miss out on a home run hire. Maybe a candidate applies for a job in project management, and on the resume, we learn that this individual was a contract employee that lead a massive system integration at a company that leads to an additional $2M in revenue at the risk of $5M in losses. Learning this alone speaks volumes about this candidate. And there’s no good way to create quality tags for that kind of experience.A candidate will want to ensure that the resume contains the keywords that are showing up in the job description, specs and competencies. Does the company want highly competent in specific software? Make sure to have a section that speaks to that particular software. In my industry, there tend to be specific skill sets within a skill cluster (multiple regression, econometric modeling, cluster analysis, etc). They could roll these up and call them “statistical modeling,” but a hiring ma nager often opts not to because he or she knows these are the core techniques we use. So, a candidate will want to match this tit-for-tat. “Experience in statistical modeling, specifically in (insert the specific ones you asked for).”There are three keyword clues usually found in a job posting, and they are on a continuum of observability. Surface-level attributes are often found within the job requirements and include the length of experience, educational background, licenses, and other related skills. These are things that are easily observed and easily verified. The next is the back â€" does the candidate’s employment history match our desires? Has he demonstrated an ability to write surveys, conduct analysis, etc.? Third are the less tangible skills, often called “soft skills.” Things like “people management,” “project coordination,” or other phrases that suggest something about an ability to execute a task. A job description might say they want a candidate to “manage a project from initiation through completion.” So you want to hit on how you have produced work from end to end. There is often some level of expressed magnitude for a skill or task. It’s a clue for the level of desire for this skill or task. If a job posting says it wants “mastery” in a software program, that’s a clue that the software is weighted heavily by the algorithm. Other key emphasis words might include: “significant,” “strong,” or “compelling,” the adverbs “successfully,” “effectively,” or “efficiently” (note the “ly” at the end) or emphasized nouns, like “mastery,” “proficiency,” or “competency.”In the arms race of rising up the ranks in web search, early SEO professionals would hide keywords throughout the website so that someone searching would be more likely to find this site. Google and other search engines figured this out quickly, so SEO folks had to adapt to work up the ranks in search properly. Some candid ates might try to do something similar with resumes. It’s called the white font trick. Candidates will simply list as many related keywords as they can fit in white font. The naked eye won’t see them but the algorithm may still pick them up. This is not a smart approach for job candidates because many algorithms have picked up on this trick and will flag this. Plus, if certain keywords come up too frequently, it’ll likely get flagged as well. Now, cover letters are still highly important. While a smart resume speaks directly to the job posting, the cover letter is a way to talk directly to the hiring manager. A way to speak to the job in more intimate detail in ways a resume cannot. A candidate can reference to those intangibles through experiences and stories, and to why he or she is a fit for the company. It is an opportunity to get noticed by the hiring manager and is often the key talking points when folks get in a room and decide who to bring in for an interview. The bigges t mistake job seekers make when submitting their resume digitally is not writing a resume to the job posting. Sending out the same generic resume is a sure way to get called by a bunch of jobs that are just looking for warm bodies. In terms of speaking to the algorithm, if the resume cannot be read on a basic word processor, it won’t do well in front of an algorithm either. Any images, unique fonts, tables, charts, are often not great for submission. I have seen some impressive resumes with graphics that detail a candidate’s skills and capabilities, but that’s better served in an interview. You only get so much space, which means minimal real estate to hit the keywords and tags the algorithm is looking for.Dr. Jon Christiansen was trained in Computational Analytics at Carnegie Mellon and holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Economics, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education from Clemson University. How 10 celebrities say they integrate work-life balance

How 10 celebrities say they integrate work-life balance How 10 celebrities say they integrate work-life balance It would seem that the issue of work-life balance wouldn’t be a dilemma in the celebrity world, but it is. Just like virtually every other working parent out there, celebrity moms and dads also struggle to provide the bacon, cook it, and still spend quality time with their kiddos. These 10 celebrities shared how they (try to) integrate work and life, all the while showing that despite fame and fortune, work-life issues plague all parents, regardless of your paycheck.Chris HemsworthThe  Avengers  actor admitted that he sometimes struggles to find  work-life balance. “Half the time, it’s out of my control,” he told CNBC Make It. “But when it is in my control, or I have an opinion, I just try and make sure I’m at home as much as possible and with the kids as much as possible.” And when it’s feasible, Hemsworth brings his three children to work with him.Felicity HuffmanYou’ve got to appreciate an honest answer. When asked how she manages her own work-life balance, actres s Felicity Huffman admitted to  People  magazine: “[P]eople always ask, ‘How do you balance home life and work?’ And I tell them, ‘I don’t. I just drop the ball all the time.’  Ã¢€ She then added: “I’m failing as both a mother and an actress. But I do what I can to stumble forward joyously.”Sarah Jessica ParkerIn an interview with  Parade  magazine,  Sex and the City  actress Sarah Jessica Parker said: “We’ve had two occasions recently where both Matthew and I were working, and it was so hard on the kids, especially James Wilkie, because he can really articulate how he feels about our absence. On the other hand, there are big chunks of time when we’re home a lot more than conventionally working parents. So you hope to make up for it.”Debra MessingThe  Will Grace  actress spoke candidly about being a single mom to her son, Roman, and still being a successful actress. “Knowing your limitations is important. It took me a long time, but now I have a pretty g ood idea of how many hours I can work on a TV show and still feel like I’m able to be present when I get home,” Messing told POPSUGAR. She also encouraged others to  seek the help of friends and family for assistance.Gwen Stefani“Finding that balance between work and family is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, by far,” Gwen Stefani, a mom of three boys, told  Glamour UK. “I’ve always worked really hard, and the hardest thing I’ve ever done is have kids!” The former No Doubt singer continued: “All of it - everything from getting up in the morning to trying to be consistent to trying to have the right feelings. But, of course, the rewards are so great.”Hilary DuffMost parents question whether you can truly  have it all. Hilary Duff told  Redbook: “It’s hard to say that you really can have it all. I think you can to a certain degree, but fully loaded, pedal-all-the-way-down is tough.” The actress and singer, already a mom to son Luca and currently expecting her second child, said: “You’re missing out on something, either on the career or on the family. When I’m really busy with work, I feel extremely guilty.”Will SmithActor Will Smith told  Us Weekly  that he has found balancing work and family life challenging. “You’ll realize that you’re either really committed to having a relationship, or you’re really committed to coming up [in your career]. At some point, one or the other is going to have to suffer.”Maggie GyllenhaalActress Maggie Gyllenhaal says that work-life balance is something that she hasn’t figured out yet.“I was surrounded by plenty of  working moms, including my grandmother, a pediatrician, and my mother, a writer and producer … I just thought, ‘Well, that’s what moms do.’ They work and raise their kids. I was brought up to believe I could do anything I wanted professionally and, of course, be a mother at the same time. But I’m finding out that it’s complicated. It requires a lot of thou ght and planning and I haven’t figured it out yet.”Julia Louis-DreyfusActress Julia Louis-Dreyfus took the very serious issue of work-life balance - and made it seriously funny. “Being a working mother can be fraught with tension at certain times. I definitely relate to the frantic fear that you’re screwing up - of doing the wrong thing despite the best of intentions,” says Julia Louis-Dreyfus. “I get up very early and get a lot of things done before my kids get up. And I compartmentalize and medicate myself on a daily basis.“Not really! I don’t medicate. But I do get up early.”Christina AguileraFor Christina Aguilera, having a strong sense of who you are pre-baby (and  staying in touch with your passion) can help you as you try to juggle work-life demands. “I wasn’t going to give up who I was before I had the baby,” admits Aguilera.  Ã¢€œIt’s important to stay true to that as an example - also for my son to find out what his goals are, what he’s passio nate about doing, so it’s sort of leading by example in that sense.”This article first appeared on FlexJobs.

Putting Stay at Home Parent on a Resume

Putting Stay at Home Parent on a Resume Putting Stay at Home Parent on a Resume Q:   What specific resume recommendations do you have for job-seekers who have been out of work for a period of time because they chose to be a stay at home parent? A:   I would NOT put “Stay at home parent” on a resume. I’ve seen it, and it just doesn’t seem professional. I also would not lie and make things more than they aren’t- if you were a member of the PTA, don’t say “Ran local large educational charity entity”. That said, if you DID chair a major fundraiser and have demonstrable or quantifiable results, and it is germane to the position you are applying for, you can mention it. I think it is important to address the time you spent out, but then focus on why you’re ready to get back. A cover letter might be a good place to do so…”I’ve spent five years at home with my children, but as I transition back into full-time employment I found myself extremely interested in “x” position because it fits my skill set of…” That is, mention the time of, and then move on to why you are a good fit for the position. Talk about how you’ve kept skills up to date, projects you’ve completed (perhaps on a consulting basis), and the like. Continue reading a Featured Interview with Meghan McCartan of Detours OnRamps.

Science Proves That What You Wear to Work Matters - The Muse

Science Proves That What You Wear to Work Matters - The Muse Science Proves That What You Wear to Work Matters You always hear the phrase “dress for success,” and think, sure, I’ll step it up a notch today when I get ready. And it probably works, right? You sit up taller, you receive compliments on how sharp you look, and you feel important because your work attire is so much fancier than what you wear on the weekends. And now you’ve got the science to back that feeling up. As a recent Science of Us article points out, there have been past studies on how clothing affects performance. For example, the Scientific American highlights studies proving more formal outfits lead to higher abstract thinking, that wearing a lab coat like a doctor can make you focus better, and that wearing the color red leads athletes to lift a heavier amount of weight (as opposed to wearing the color blue- who knew?). The point is, what you wear matters. So is that it, always dress up when you need an extra boost? Not exactly. Science of Us also cites a study stating that dressing down when your office is a normally formal setting can also lead to higher productivity and give off the impression that you are better at your job than others. This study’s based on Harvard Business School research that analyzed students’ opinions of college professors: [T]he authors described two male college professors- one clean-shaven and dressed in a suit, the other with a beard and a T-shirt- and asked college students to rate each man’s skills as a teacher and researcher. True to what the authors had observed in their field study, the students thought more highly of the casual professor- but only when the descriptions mentioned that the professors worked at prestigious universities with formal dress codes. In other words, it wasn’t the casual dress itself that inspired more confidence; it was the nonconformist attitude that the casual outfit signified- which, in turn, is seen as a ‘reflect[ion of] high levels of autonomy and control.’ Before you rush off to take off your blazer and throw on a pair of sweats (or stop reading studies altogether because they contradict each other), the article emphasizes the importance of intention- if you’re wearing informal clothes because you’re lazy or because you read this article, that doesn’t exactly help boost your respect around the office. But, if you make the conscious decision to break the status quo every once in a while because it’s important to you, people notice and admire it. Only you know what is and isn’t appropriate in your office, but if there’s one thing this study emphasizes, it’s that clothes matter when it comes to how you feel. So, if you have a bit of flexibility with work attire, choose your favorite accessory or outfit when you need a confidence boost, even if it’s not “typical” in your office. It could make all the difference.

6 Clever Ways to Make a Mid-Day Break

6 Clever Ways to Make a Mid-Day Break 6 Clever Ways to Make a Mid-Day Break A mid-day break can make or break your day. If you skip it, youll have little energy left to take care of your family later during your second shift. But if you take the right kind of mid-day break you can set yourself up for a successful and happy evening. So what is the secret sauce to taking a successful mid-day break? The first step is scheduling it and the second is having something planned that you look forward to doing. Something that compels you to walk away from your work and have fun. Your goal will be to make taking a mid-day break a good habit. Unsure where to start? Weve got your back. Here are a few clever ways to take a mid-day break so you can enjoy the rest of your day. Stop to Eat Something When you are tempted to work through lunch think about the consequences. Although  a third of US workers chose to eat at their desk  and work it decreases your energy. Working efficiently is the key to career success, not constantly working.  So schedule your lunch break on your calendar every Is there a yummy meal you love to eat at work? Youre going to need something better than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to get you away from your desk. Pinterest is great for research lunch ideas that you can prepare ahead of time. Grabbing takeout may seem easy, but its time-consuming. If you meal plan for your family dinners, then apply the same tactics to your lunch. Find  Your Happy Place at Work This happy place at work is a place youll retreat to on those days when work feels hectic and you want to unplug. After you eat lunch, head to the ladies room, then go on an excursion. Find a quiet place in your lobby, or rock you can sit on outside, and take some time for yourself. Make sure its a place no one will disturb you can enjoy some silence. Silence is golden, right?   Bring a book or meditate and resist the urge to stare at your phone. Youll appreciate this screen-free time later when you have more energy to spend on your family. You could also pack an adult coloring book and supplies in a bag you can quickly grab. Or if you have privacy, do some yoga stretches. Take Movement Breaks Do you feel drained in the late afternoon? Although it may not feel like the opportune time to move your body, go do a flight of stairs. Get away from your desk for ten minutes and move your body. It wont take long, I promise, plus youll feel the benefits later on when you have the energy to play with your kids later. If you dont have stairs a quick walk is just as good. Just be sure its not a leisurely one. Pick up the pace to increase your heart rate plus youll get back to your desk quicker. Eat an Apple Have you heard the rumor that eating an apple is like drinking coffee? Yeah, that made me laugh, too. A working mom knows how important coffee is to thrive at work! But there are some perks to eating an apple mid-day instead of a cup of joe. Apples contain natural fructose sugar that will give you an energy boost and a healthier one than coffee will. It also has more calories than coffee! If eating an apple feels too messy, you can peel and slice up your apple and squeeze some lemon juice on them to prevent browning. Pack a side of peanut butter or almond butter for a protein burst! Allow Water to Energize You Drinking water will not energize you, but keeping yourself hydrated is a sure way to keep your energy levels up! So in the late afternoon walk away from your desk to fill up your water bottle. Guzzle it while you head to the ladies room. Then splash a bit of cold water to wake up you. You can also put your wrist under the faucet to lower your body temperature to wake you up a bit. If you find yourself dragging in the afternoon it may be because you havent had enough water. Soda or seltzer water does not hydrate your body as well as water.  For a little pick me up, add some ice! Find a Reason to Laugh Work stressing you out in the afternoon? Find a way to make yourself laugh. The first step is to smile. This can be challenging when youre feeling stressed. A great trick is to get some kind of funny day-to-day calendar. You can glance at the joke of the day and crack a smile. Or frame a hilarious picture of your kids that will put a big smile on your face. Once these tricks bring you back to reality, meaning work isnt your life so dont let it stress you out, start to laugh. Even if its fake at first, keep trying to giggle. Eventually, youll get a good chuckle and will get a quick burst of energy. Now that you have some things to do during lunch or late afternoon, head to your calendar. Find pockets of time you can schedule quick ten minute breaks and put them on your calendar. Put lunch on your calendar, too so you can make plans to perk up. This is the cleverest trick of them all! Plan it and youll more likely do it!
